Moving salmon is nearly twice as profitable as growing it, research shows

The wellboat industry is almost twice as profitable as the salmon farming sector, according to a recent analysis by Norwegian research firm Kontali.

The Norwegian wellboat industry -- which consists of 17 companies -- recorded an EBIT (earnings before interest and taxes) margin of 33.2 percent, which is the highest margin of all seafood sectors, Kontali found.

The margin is almost twice as high as that of Norwegian salmon producers, which reported a margin between 17.9 percent and 19 percent.
