Severe "icy" weather conditions could be one reason why Icelandic salmon farmer Laxar fiskeldi's large feed barge sunk in Reydarfjordur Saturday, CEO Jens Gardar Helgason told IntraFish.

"At this moment, we do not have the exact reasons why the barge sank but we are looking at if icing had to do with it," Helgason said.

No one was on board the barge when the incident took place, but there is "a considerable amount of feed" -- 300 metric tons according to RUV -- and equipment on board the barge as well as 10,000 liters of diesel oil, which is now resting 40 meters below the surface of and Icelandic fjord, according to a Facebook post from the company.
