In surprise move, Pure Salmon France relocates its delayed land-based salmon farm

The company has made the surprise move because it was unable to gain access to salt water used in the plant's operation.

Pure Salmon's original choice at Landacres was less than a 20 minute drive to Boulogne-sur-Mer, while the new site is around eight hours away.

Land-based salmon producer Pure Salmon is relocating its planned French production site away from the northern port city of Boulogne-Sur-Mer to a new site in southwestern France.

The company made the surprise move because it is unable to gain access to salt water used in the plant's operation.

Landacres Pure Salmon's original choice for the farm, is less than a 20 minute drive from Boulogne-sur-Mer, while the new site in Gironde, France, is around eight hours away.

Last year, Pure Salmon acquired the recirculating aquaculture division (RAS) of Kruger Kaldnes, now known as Pure Salmon Kaldnes under a plan to use brackish and salt water in the production process.

Brackish water is a mixture of fresh and salt water.

Pure Salmon -- backed by investment group 8F -- earlier chose Boulogne-Sur-Mer as the site for its second EU, which it expects will be the largest land-based salmon facility in the EU. It also has a 580 metric-ton facility in Poland.

Construction of the French site was originally scheduled to start in the fourth quarter of 2020, with the first harvest of full-grown salmon expected in 2023.

Iod and La Petite Smokehouse smoked salmon has been stocked by several "prestigious" Tokyo department stores such as Ginza Mitsukoshi and Isetan Shinjuku.
