The Norwegian Food Safety Authority (Mattilsynet) has granted salmon farming and processing giants Leroy Seafood and Mowi an exemption from regulations that require lower-grade farmed fish -- so-called "production fish" -- to be processed in Norway, a decision that has sparked debate within the country's seafood sector.

Under existing regulations, production fish, which may have significant blemishes, ulcerations or other glaring physical defects, cannot be exported to the European Economic Area.
