Chile's salmon industry is stepping up political lobbying and public relations efforts ahead of what could be bruising debates next year over a new law governing the aquaculture sector.

Spurred on by the narrowness of a tied joint Senate-Congress committee vote in May that derailed part of a bill that could have slashed the country's 1 million metric tons of farmed salmon production in half and led to the loss of as many as 70,000 jobs, the salmon industry is looking to bolster its reputation with lawmakers and the public.
