The Chilean salmon industry is calling on the incoming government of leftist Gabriel Boric to help promote "sustainable growth" in the sector, hoping to strike a conciliatory tone with the new president who spoke out against the industry during his campaign.

Just before Christmas, Boric won the decisive second round of elections in the South American nation, defeating conservative hard-line candidate Jose Antonio Kast with 56 percent of the vote.

At 35, Boric, a former radical student leader, becomes Chile's youngest president.
