The Chilean salmon industry suffered a near fivefold increase in the number of fish escaping from production sites in 2020.

At 410,150, the number was the highest since 2018, when more than 750,000 fish escaped from pens, according to numbers from trade association SalmonChile.

The figure was lifted by the escape of 103,720 salmon from a site belonging to Chilean farmer Blumar in the Los Lagos region in June last year, according to Chile's National Fisheries and Aquaculture Service (Sernapesca).
