The Chilean salmon industry is downplaying the potential impact of a 15-day state of emergency declared by embattled President Sebastian Pinera.

The measure, which could be extended to 30 days, runs across Biobio and Arauco in the Biobio region, as well as Malleco and Cautin in La Araucania, where the government has bolstered the presence of police and military forces.

Pinera took the action citing repeated acts of violence linked to drug trafficking, terrorism and organized crime committed by armed groups that have killed both civilians and police officers.
