Mitsubishi-owned salmon farmer Cermaq is planning to build a new smolt facility in the Finnmark region of Northern Norway.

Cermaq already has four smolt facilities in Nordland, but none in Finnmark, though the company farms salmon in both areas.

Last year, Cermaq sold 70,500 metric tons of salmon in Norway and 184,000 metric tons worldwide, on par with AquaChile as the world's second-largest salmon producer. In Norway, the company is the fourth largest.

Communication Manager for Cermaq Norway Astrid Aam did not give a price tag on the proposed project to IntraFish, but said projects of similar scope usually cost a few hundred million kroner.
