Diane Lebouthillier will take over as Canada's fisheries minister from Joyce Murray, who will not seek re-election, leaving plans for a transition away from netpen salmon farming in British Columbia by 2025 up in the air.

Lebouthillier is a member of Canada's Liberal Party, whose leader is Justin Trudeau, the country's prime minister. She was first elected as the Member of Parliament for Gaspesie—Les Iles-de-la-Madeleine in 2015. She has previously served as the Minister of National Revenue.

She spent more than 23 years working with clients at the Rocher-Perce Health and Social Services Centre in Canada, and has a background in social services, according to her government profile.
