Chilean salmon farmer AquaChile has bolstered its fleet of wellboats by one to 12 after signing a leasing agreement with manufacturer Detroit.

Built at a Brazilian yard, its latest vessel can carry 270 metric tons of salmon.

The wellboat, named EIR, will begin operating on Jan. 11 between Chile's southern Aysen and Los Lagos regions.

Although AquaChile declined to say how much the leasing contract is worth, the company is likely to benefit from huge cost savings.
