US-based grocery chain Food City will be the first to use multinational financial services company Mastercard's blockchain technology to trace back several fish and shellfish including salmon, cod and shrimp.

Mastercard recently announced its collaboration with the tech solution firm Envision to take part in increasing supply chain traceability in the seafood sector.

Retail giant Topco will offer member supermarkets, including Food City, Envision's Wholechain system.

US-based Whole Foods supplier Raw Seafoods is another company planning a user-friendly app connected directly to the Food Trust platform, to allow consumers to access information about their scallops directly from the menu or point of sale in the retail locations by scanning a QR code.

Walmart is also using IBM's Blockchain Platform, in cooperation with Indian seafood processor Sandhya Aqua and US supplier Stanley Pearlman.
