Australia's chief medical officer confirmed two Australians died after consuming listeria contaminated smoked salmon in New South Wales and Victoria, ABC News reported.

The salmon, which was possibly from Tasmania, affected the two 70-year-old victims.

However, salmon producers in Tasmania were cleared of food safety misconduct, Tasmania's Premier Will Hodgman said.

"I'm advised that the investigations have determined there have been no breaches of national health standards by Tasmanian companies," Hodgman said.

Tasmanian salmon supplier Tassal announced products as safe in a statement, while Huon Aquaculture also announced that recent tests showed no positive results for listeria or breaches of food standards.
