Seattle-based Trident Seafoods agreed to a major upgrade of its refrigeration equipment, committing to spend up to $23 million (€20.3 million) to reduce emissions from its vessels as part of a settlement with the US Environmental Protection agency and the US Department of Justice, the EPA announced Tuesday.

Under the terms of the deal, Trident will retrofit or retire 23 appliances used on 14 marine vessels to reduce leaks, improve monitoring and use alternative refrigerants, a move that will remove nearly 100,000 pounds of harmful refrigerant from use, the EPA stated.
