Swedish researchers say processed seafood wastewater holds enough leached protein in it to make it a potential raw material for developing aquaculture feed or to grow microalgae.

There are "valuable nutrients" in the water used for processing seafood, and if the findings of the technology are scaled, can be used to replace ingredients such as fishmeal in feed, a Swedish scientist told IntraFish.

Research from the Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden, shows that seafood processing water is a valuable source of protein, peptides, fats and micronutrients, based on experiments done on herring and shrimp production.
