New Zealand seafood company Sanford announced it will move its whitefish processing north to Timaru and address possible job losses as a result, reports RNZ.

Union members and Sanford employees joined in getting the community involved to challenge the proposal.

About 30 jobs are expected to go, but the exact number will be confirmed by the end of July.

Despite job losses, the company's CEO is still confident about the business's future.

If the company had told staff about the job cut earlier, it would've created an atmosphere of uncertainty, said CEO Volker Kuntzsch.
