Labour shortages are a growing problem within the seafood industry as more companies struggle to attract new workers. Competition from other industries, the less than glamorous image of processing work and a lack of interest among young people have all been cited as reasons for the decline. Processors must counter this by forming closer ties with the labour providers, and do more to attract – and most importantly retain – new staff. To ensure the future supply of processing staff, processors must also appeal to the next generation of factory workers.
