The US Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) $23 million fine against Seattle-based Trident Seafoods for pollution from poorly-maintained refrigeration is not likely to be the last one given to a seafood company, a spokeswoman with the agency told IntraFish.

"It's not a one-off," Suzanne Skadowski, an EPA spokeswoman, said of whether other seafood companies could see similar penalties in the future.

In recent years, other seafood companies have settled with the EPA over similar issues, including Seattle-based US Seafoods, which in 2017 agreed to pay a $135,000 (€119,000) penalty, and replace some or all of its current R‑22 freezers with units that use ammonia, and retire those not replaced.
