Cold-smoked trout and salmon produced in Estonia is a source of the listeria monocytogenes outbreak that has affected 22 people in five countries since 2014. The latest case was reported in Denmark in February 2019. Five people have died over this period as a result of the infection.

Experts from EFSA and the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) were able to confirm the source of the infection using whole genome sequencing and traceability investigations.

The affected countries are Denmark, where nine cases were reported; Estonia with six cases; Finland with two cases; France with one case; and Sweden with four.
