Seafood processors have long been squeezed between suppliers and retailers, and something needs to change to ensure long-term survival, according to Espersen CEO Klaus Nielsen.

As consolidation heats up in the sector -- notably agri-giants such as Cargill and JBS have made recent plays in the salmon farming industry -- processors need to consider what they can do to remain competitive.

“We’ve been squeezed in the middle for many years, and it is fair to say the profitability in industries like ours has not been good enough,” said Nielsen, speaking at the IntraFish Seafood Leadership Luncheon in Barcelona on April 27.
