Scottish processor Pelagia is planning an upgrade to its salmon trimmings plant in Greenock in a move expected to safeguard the future of the site.

The company processes salmon trimmings to produce fish oil and protein ingredients at the plant, the Greenock Telegraph reported.

Products are sold to feed producers in Europe, the United States and Asia.

Pelagia has submitted a planning permission application to upgrade, refurbish and expand the plant, which was previously part of the Tate & Lyle sugar refinery.
