Surimi production in Hokkaido, Japan, increased 25 percent in the first six months of the year to 7,538 metric tons, according to the latest figures from the country's National Surimi Association.

In June alone, total production of frozen surimi from five factories in Hokkaido was 1,934 metric tons, an increase of 10 percent compared with the same month last year.

Of the surimi production in June, Alaska pollock surimi accounted for 1,771 metric tons, up 2 percent year-on-year, while Atka mackerel surimi made up 163 metric tons -- an eightfold increase.

Alaska pollock made up 6,917 metric tons of the total surimi production in the first six months– a 24 percent increase on the same period last year – while Atka mackerel surimi doubled to reach 2,025 metric tons.

Inventory levels of surimi in Hokkaido at the end of June were at 4,737 metric tons, up 90 percent year-on-year.

Of this, Alaska pollock surimi accounts for 4,323 metric tons, up 83 percent, and Atka mackerel surimi is 242 metric tons --17 times more than last year.
