German spending on fish and seafood climbed 16.5 percent in the first half of 2020, despite the global coronavirus pandemic, according to new data provided by the Fisch-Informationszentrum (FIZ).

Consumers shelled out €2.4 billion ($2.8 billion) on fish and seafood, a new record.

From January to June, purchasing volumes rose by 14.8 percent to 236,665 metric tons.

As a reflection of this, German frozen seafood giant Frosta posted a near three-fold increase in first half earnings as the company benefited from stronger demand for frozen foods brought on by the coronavirus pandemic.
