As the coronavirus takes a toll on the European seafood sector, the EU Fish Processors and Traders Association (AIPCE-CEP) is asking for temporary regulatory changes to take pressure off the sector.

The proposal includes changes to the European Maritime and Fisheries Fund (EMFF) to provide financial aid to fishermen and safeguard the income of aquaculture producers, and a request to consider providing temporary aid to the processing segment.

Supply shortages, one of the major impacts of the coronavirus outbreak, are leading to a lack of fresh fish availability, as the catching sector sees no incentive to go to sea in the face of plumetting prices.
