There simply is no substitute for Russian pollock should the European Union ban imports in response to the war in Ukraine, according to one of Europe’s largest whitefish processors.

Sofina-owned EU whitefish processor Greenland Seafood, which recently underwent a management overhaul, has factories in Germany and France and produces 1.3 million fish meals per day across 10 production lines. The company employs roughly 400 people.

Roughly 70 percent of Greenland Seafood's business is Alaska pollock, mostly double-frozen, or twice-frozen, from China, said Patrick Barinet, managing director of Greenland Seafood.
