European land-based salmon farming startup Columbi Salmon has appointed Siv Lene Gangenes Skar as chief operating officer (COO) for aquaponics subsidiary Columbi Farms.

Skar joins from her position as researcher scientist at the Norwegian Institute of Bioeconomy Research (NIBIO), where she worked for 14 years.

Skar holds advanced degrees in agriculture and agricultural operations from the Norwegian University of Life Sciences.

Columbi Salmon is establishing a land-based salmon farming project in Oostende, Belgium. Over the coming years, the company will establish further production facilities throughout Europe and aims to produce 15,000-20,000 metric tons annually by 2023 or 2024.

As part of the project, the group will also be developing aquaponics systems for growing vegetables alongside fish as well.

The company, launched by former salmon sector analysts Anders Hagen and Kolbjorn Giskeodegaard, chose Billund Aquaculture as its technology supplier last month.
