Seafood and Gender Equality (SAGE), a nonprofit initiative aimed at building a more inclusive seafood industry, has received a grant of of $400,000 (€379,766) from Builders Initiative to further its mission to ensure a more inclusive, diverse, and equal seafood sector.

"This grant to SAGE sends a strong signal that there is a critical need to advance women’s power and influence in the seafood sector and that gender equality and empowering women are priorities," said SAGE founder Julie Kuchepatov, a former director of seafood at Fair Trade USA.

SAGE has already used one grant Builders Initiative provided in 2021 to develop a strategic plan and strong foundation for future impact and growth and increased attention around the issues of gender inequality in the seafood sector, Kuchepatov said.

The initiative has support from various sustainability leaders, including former Thai Union Global Director of Corporate Affairs and Sustainability Darian McBain and President and CEO of Bristol Seafood Peter Handy.

SAGE is sponsored by Coastal Quest, a Californian non-profit with a mission to build resilient coastal communities.
