The former managing director of Marine Harvest Scotland – now Mowi – is joining Indian netting and rope manufacturer Garware Technical Fibres to head up the company's division in Scotland.

Alan Sutherland, who served as managing director of Mowi Scotland for nine years until 2016, brings four decades of aquaculture experience to Garware.

Working initially with rainbow trout in 1982, Sutherland moved into Atlantic salmon in 1997, working mostly in Scotland but also in Canada and the United States.

He has been involved in various aquaculture-based consultancy projects, including producing tilapia in Africa and barramundi in Iowa.

In March 2020, Sutherland joined the Scottish Salmon Company (SSC) as marine director.

Sutherland acted as an adviser to Vescor Group on insect meal for aquaculture diets until March 2020 and was a board member at African Century, sub-Saharan Africa’s largest aquaculture producer with tilapia farms in Zimbabwe, Zambia and Uganda.

Before joining SSC, he was an independent aquaculture industry consultant.

Garware Technical Fibres manufactures aquaculture cage nets, lice shields, and ropes for many of the world's major fish farmers.

The company is listed in India and has a turnover of approximately $141 million (€118.3 million).

Garware's products are currently sold in 76 countries worldwide.
