Iceland Seafood International (ISI) is appointing a former top executive at Hilton Seafood to head up its UK operations.

Glen Mathews, most recently production director at Hilton Seafood, will take over as the new managing director of Iceland Seafood UK, a division that has faced a range of challenges over the past year.

Mathews has more than 30 years of experience in the seafood processing sector.

He was with Hilton Seafood -- formerly Icelandic Seachill -- for 20 years, managing three factories with more than 1,400 employees.

ISI announced in November 2021 it was making changes to strengthen the local management team of its UK arm to address various business complexities, increased retail exposure and position the group for upcoming growth.

Reynir Jonsson, the group CFO, stepped in as an interim managing director, and at the same time it was announced Mathews would be joining the business as operations director at end of February 2022.

ISI said in November that the integration of its UK operation has been more complex and costly than anticipated.

ISI CEO Bjarni Armannsson said at the time a "combination of ramping up a renovated factory, dealing with challenging logistics from southeast Asia and merging two factories in a period of COVID-19 issues and Brexit" all conspired against the division.

Despite the challenges, the outlook and potential for the UK business remains strong, said ISI, but this year results will be “severely impacted” by the situation.

The company said new business with both existing and new customers coming in the fourth quarter and early next year should significantly increase production volume and the use of the UK facility.
