Genetically modified salmon producer AquaBounty has hired Chris Beattie as chief scientific officer.

Starting in July, Beattie will lead the research and development, compliance and regulatory functions at the company.

Chris has more than 20 years of international experience in the aquaculture industry in the nutrition, health and technology sectors.

Mark Walton, AquaBounty’s current chief technology officer, will assist Beattie on critical regulatory projects as he transitions into retirement.

Prior to joining AquaBounty, Beattie was leading the North American and Australasian business for aquaculture technology supplier Akva Group.

He also did a substantial stint at Merck Animal Health as head of global aquaculture and was responsible for setting the R&D direction and executing the firm's global aquaculture strategy. He began his career with feed giant Skretting.

"[Beattie] will bring tremendous insight to the design and construction of our farm in Pioneer, Ohio, and will continue to strengthen our expertise in breeding, genetics and fish health,” said AquaBounty CEO Sylvia Wulf.
