BC Salmon Farmers Association's (BCSFA) Executive Director John Paul Fraser has departed the association.

After more than three years with the BCSFA, Fraser in February joined Westerkirk Capital, a Canada-based private equity firm, as its communications director, according to his LinkedIn profile.

BCSFA's senior advisor Ruth Salmon will be stepping into the role as interim executive director for the next six months, the association said.

She previously served as the executive director for 10 years for the Canadian Aquaculture Industry Alliance (CAIA) and has been a member of BCSFA since 2018.

In June, 19 salmon farming licenses in the Discovery Islands will expire as the country phases out netpen salmon farming in the British Columbia region.

Joyce Murray, Canada's new Minister of Fisheries, Oceans and Canadian Coast Guard (DFO), has publicly stated she is committed to phasing out the netpen farms owned by Mowi, Cermaq and Grieg.

The BCSFA said its focus this year is renewing the remaining 79 salmon farming licenses and tenures set to expire this June in British Columbia.
