Seattle-based pollock giant American Seafoods has hired Tim Fitzgerald as the company's new chief sustainability officer.

Prior to joining the Alaska pollock producer, he worked for nearly two decades at NGO Environmental Defense Fund (EDF), where he oversaw initiatives with investors, multilateral institutions, and the seafood industry related to fisheries sustainability.

Originally trained as a shark scientist, Fitzgerald has appeared on Shark Week and National Geographic Explorer, and been featured in Time, The Wall Street Journal, the New York Times, and NPR.

On his LinkedIn page he said he will be in charge of American Seafoods' environmental sustainability and social responsibility portfolio, while also shaping ambitious new climate and public affairs initiatives.
