This month will be known as the first time the land-based salmon farming industry got a taste of how ugly and complicated opposition can look.

Atlantic Sapphire, the most advanced land-based salmon farming operation so far, with commercial production in Denmark and the United States, found itself in the crosshairs of animal rights activist group Animal Outlook for a range of alleged animal welfare violations for a die-off of 500,000 fish earlier in the year.

The group, which went after Cooke Aquaculture in 2019, filed a lawsuit calling for hefty fines and jail time for the CEO.
