After failing to agree on management policies for the Maldives pole-and-line skipjack tuna fishery, the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) put a halt to the fishery's Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) certification last week by putting down £5,000 ($5,000/€6,242) to file a formal objection.
"We look forward to amicably and satisfactorily completing our discussions during the arbitration phase of the objection process," Bill Fox, WWF's vice president of fisheries, told IntraFish on Friday, which was the deadline for filing objections.
The WWF had planned to object if the Maldives failed to comply with its main asks of the Maldives government, which center around developing firm plans and target dates to comply with the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) code of conduct of having limit reference points, harvest control rules and an overall precautionary management plan, Fox said.
