Next year's catch limits in the Bering Sea and Gulf of Alaska hit atka mackerel (pleurogrammus monopterygius) hard, sending a clear message to suppliers that market challenges are looming for other flatfish species.
The total allowable catch (TAC) for atka mackerel in the Bering Sea and Aleutian Islands for 2013 is 25,920 metric tons, down 49 percent from 50,763 metric tons in 2012.
"That's a concern for anyone that has the atka mackerel allocation," Mike Faris, CEO of groundfish fishing company Ocean Peace, told IntraFish.
