Broodstock and high market prices currently pose barriers to commercial pomfret farming, but many in the aquaculture field believe these could be easily resolved with a little investment.
"If you know the technology, it's easy to farm," Charles M. James, consultant with Farm-Ocean Technologies, India told IntraFish when we interviewed him for our latest report into new farmed species.
Nevertheless, "ample" financial resources are a must. For a hatchery and grow-out facility, initial investment costs would range between $2 million (€1.6 million) and $3 million (€2.4 million), said James, who is pushing for the Indian government to launch a project on pomfret farming.
