It will be retailers, many of which have made major commitments to selling MSC-labeled products, which will decide if the decision by companies representing over 70 percent of the Alaska salmon fisheries to withdraw from certification is a success, several seafood industry sources said.
IntraFish contacted several retailers for comment, but none responded.
Alaska salmon was certified in 2011 by the independent organization Global Trust, a clear sign to many that salmon suppliers were waning in their support of the MSC program.
