An investment firm backed in part by Walmart scions, Cuna del Mar, has acquired leading aquaculture R&D company the Center for Aquaculture Technologies (CAT).

CAT currently operates two laboratories: its research hub in San Diego, California, and state-of-the-art wet lab facilities including biosafety level (BSL 3) containment for aquatic animal pathogens on Prince Edward Island in Canada.

CAT’s stated aim is to enable the aquaculture industry to achieve efficient production of through genetic improvement as well as facilitating commercial development of innovative feed and health management products and services.

“CAT has a tremendously talented team of people with unique capabilities, who are dedicated to making a difference for our customers and the industry as a whole,” Cuna Del Mar Managing Director Robert Orr said.

Cuna Del Mar owns offshore cobia producer Open Blue Sea Farms, aquaculture technology company Innovasea Land Systems, Mexican totoaba and Pacific red snapper producer Earth Ocean Farms and oyster producer Sol Azul Maricultivos in Mexico.
