Walmart, the world's largest retailer, on Friday announced new positions on animal welfare and the responsible use of antibiotics in farm animals, including seafood, that would require additional reporting requirements and adherence to veterinary and federal guidances on antibiotic use.

In a new updated position statement, the company said it expects all of Walmart US and Sam’s Club US frozen and fresh seafood, meat, deli, dairy and egg suppliers to adopt and implement American Veterinary Medicinal Association (AVMA) Judicious use Principles of Antimicrobials guidelines and standards laid out in the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) voluntary guidance on the judicious use of medically important antimicrobial drugs.

The
