AquaChile touts its new Verlasso salmon as “harmoniously raised,” a term that has elicited some raised eyebrows since the product launched a few weeks ago, but an expert from Biomar Group says the company’s methods are scientifically sound.
Most notably, AquaChile claims to have reduced its use of feeder fish by 75 percent. Instead of a four-to-one feeder fish to fish produced ratio, it is producing at a one-to-one ratio, the company said.
The "harmonious" approach enables yeast to produce omega-3s, reducing the number of feeder fish needed, instead of depending solely upon fish for the necessary omega-3s in the fish meal.
