Tilapia imports through the first eight months of the year are up by 28.2 percent over last year, to 149,200 tons.
The species is poised to reclaim its position as the fourth top seafood seller in the United States, up from fifth last year.
It is demand, rather than supply, that seems to be driving the increase, Mark Palicki, vice president of marketing for Fortune Fish, told IntraFish.
“It used to be a kind of a more fast-casual, quick-service restaurants (product), and it seems to be moving up the restaurant hierarchy at this time.
