To fight this, the world’s largest salmon farmer has appealed to the European Free Trade Authority (EFTA) to challenge Norwegian rules on ownership limits.
However, the outcome is far from certain as EFTA may be powerless to rule on the issue.
Complaining to ESA
On Sept. 20, Marine Harvest lodged a complaint with EFTA against Norway’s ownership rules, which limit any salmon producer from owning more than 25 percent of the country’s salmon farm licenses.
The complaint was filed with EFTA’s Surveillance Authority (ESA) which monitors compliance to the European Economic Agreement (EEA) signed between EFTA and the European Union (EU).
