New trade rules under the United States Marine Mammal Protection Act (MMPA) require all UK seafood exporters to provide information on the origin of the fish and fish products exported to the United States starting Sept. 2.

The United States will enforce new restrictions on seafood harvesting and farming for nations that export to the US market in an attempt to make those countries' marine mammal protection practices equivalent to those governing US fisheries.

Seafood exporters in the United Kingdom are required to fill out a form listing seafood origin details, for the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs. The information will be added to the US government's list of intermediary nations and products.

Failure to comply could impact a country's ability to export seafood to the United States in the future.
