The price for skipjack tuna raw material, the main commodity for the world tuna canning sector, is likely to remain over $2,200 for a metric ton, said executives with some of the world’s largest tuna companies.

Bumble Bee Foods is modeling for prices to remain between $2,200 and $2,300 for 2012, slightly higher than figures given by Thai Union Frozen Products, the world’s largest tuna canner, which is modeling the skipjack prices to stay between $2,100 and $2,200.

“We believe that these higher price levels reflect a new reality and will continue to trend up, although not at the pace of the last 18 months,” Chris Lischewski, CEO of Bumble Bee, told IntraFish.
