Slaughter volumes for Norwegian trout climbed 36 percent between 2011 and 2012, estimates Kontali Analyse Executive Chairman Lars Liabo.

Around 74,000 metric tons live weight (whole fish equivalents - WFE) of trout where slaughtered in the last 12 months, compared to 53,000 metric tons in the previous year.

However, when compared with salmon -- which topped 1 million metric tons for the first time last year -- the numbers seem incredibly low.

“We’re expecting a slight decline in 2013,” Liabo told IntraFish.

Trout production will stand at between 60,000 and 70,000 metric tons live weight in the coming years, he said, unless the sector ramps up its marketing activities extensively.
