US shrimp buyers are having trouble getting access to shrimp as the year begins, thanks to a lull in production from Asia and significantly depleted volumes coming in from Mexico.

The supply of Mexican shrimp is particularly low, Charlie Decker, regional sales manager for Ocean Garden, told IntraFish.

“It’ll probably be our lowest year of receipts ever,” Decker said.

Ocean Garden buys from a consortium of farmers in Mexico that own the company. At one point, the company was buying 80 percent of the shrimp that came out of Mexico, and while it is still the biggest single supplier of Mexican shrimp, its share is now between 25 and 30 percent, Decker said.
