Low-cost promotions dominated holiday seafood sales at retailers in the United Kingdom. Lobster seems to have emerged as one of the big winners, as well as all-time Christmas favorite salmon -- despite higher prices.

Industry watchers predicted ahead of the festive season shoppers would shop for bargains. This was reflected by market research institute Nielsen, which said in its Christmas outlook shoppers will continue to look for "quality and value" and that "savvy shopping continued."

When surveyed in November 2013, 48 percent of households expected to spend the same during Christmas but 36 percent were looking to spend less.
