Chandrasoma said the South Asian country has a great ability to cultivate much more freshwater fish than it currently is, reported Lanka Business Online.

In 2010, Sri Lanka produced 52,000 tons of inland fish, which was valued at between 6 and 7 billion Sri Lankan rupees ($54.8 million-$63.9 million/€37.8 million-€44 million). Fish production in the country is moving rapidly, but the nation has been more hesitant to embrace aquaculture. Total fish production in 2010 was 404,800 metric tons, up from 163,230 in just 2005, according to a report by the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquatic Resource Development.
