Spanish seafood trader Interatlantic is expanding its foothold in China, with the launch of a new product line, CEO Luis Cabaleiro announced at the recent China Seafood and Fisheries Expo in Qingdao.

The company will soon kick-start sales of a new line of Argentinian red shrimp sold under the Interatlantic brand, a spokesperson at the company told IntraFish in a statement.

Argentinian shrimp have been facing issues in China with the rejection of several shipments by Chinese authorities due to higher-than-allowed levels of sodium metabisulphite found in some products.

But Cabaleiro said the "problem stems from the fact that the different Chinese provinces set their own tolerance parameters and, even though the central authorities have decided to adapt to the level of 100 ppm of metabisulphite applied by other countries, not all the official bodies in this Asian country have been notified."

He went on saying that this is where the success of the new venture lies.
