Product innovation is the only way to survive in the tough economic climate in Spain, said an executive from a La Coruna-based processor.

Isidro de la Cal is launching microwavable clam products, which are to be followed by shrimp and mussel and other mollusc SKUs, said Javier Aran, the company’s research and development director.

“Times are tough in Spain; but retailers want to take on products that show innovation and offer something different,” he told IntraFish.

The company is going in the direction of producing more convenience products with can be refrigerated with a 30-day shelf life, he said.
